ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: In this workshop, we will explore filmmaker Kirsten Johnson’s notion that it is never too late to get to know someone you love more deeply, even after they are gone. We will explore our losses and our lost loved ones through creative writing, with the hope (and the belief) that this communal work will be of use to all of us as we move through our grief process(es). The course is appropriate for those who already have projects underway as well as for those who don't, and for those who might just be curious to see what writing can do for them; we will generate new work as well as share with one another. This workshop will meet online for six weeks, with six sessions of 1.5 hours each. The workshop will be capped at 8 people. Please do not sign up for this workshop unless you feel you are able to share openly about your loss and your lost person without doing undue harm to yourself.
[Please note: your loss must not be the loss of a person! Grief is a word that encompasses many things. Feel free to reach out (info@nellie.hermann.com) if you wish to discuss whether the course is right for you.]
* If you want to join but the cost is prohibitive for you, please reach out.
Testimonials from previous workshops:
“Nellie Hermann has a way about her--she is a wonderful writer, a wonderful listener, deeply knowledgeable about grief and grieving. She releases people to tell the grief stories they have had stuck inside, and they tell them in ways poetic and profound. You don't need to be a writer to benefit from her classes, but you might just become one. “ --Karen Malpede
“There are many kinds of grief that accompany us through life, and the ability to discern them and write about them creatively serves as the launching pad from which we become able to see, more deeply, the grief for what it is. This course awakened me to the vulnerabilities of writing about grief, but also to the power of asking myself some serious, but enlightening, questions. The workshop is only five weeks, but opens you up to a lifetime of further exploration.” — Karen Stugensky
“Nellie's Grief Writing Workshop was a welcoming and supportive space within which I felt safe to explore how I thought I'd like to approach putting some very difficult personal experiences into words. I was looking for very practical support, and found Nellie's 'writing prompts' particularly helpful. I also learned a great deal from the others who were there as they each brought such different ideas and perspectives to our sessions.” - Maia Forrester
“Nellie Hermann is an astute, eminently thoughtful, and skillful writing instructor and workshop facilitator. She sets a tone of kindness, mutual respect, and emphasizes the process rather than the output. She's an accomplished writer herself, and while that doesn't necessarily make for skillful facilitation, with Nellie, it goes hand-in-hand. She's an excellent teacher.” - Anonymous
“Being part of this grief writing workshop was one of the best gifts I have given myself - ever.” - N.
