Nellie, pictured at right on Cape Cod with two of her brothers, grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. She attended Brown University, earning her B.A.in May of 2000. Nellie received her M.F.A. from Columbia University. The Cure for Grief is her first novel. She currently works as a writing teacher in the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University Medical School.
